Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first rolled up to the Union Hotel Prague on Ostrcilovo namesti – I mean, it’s tucked away in this quiet square in Smichov that most tourists probably can’t even pronounce. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are the ones hiding in plain sight.

The thing about this place is that it actually feels like Prague, not some sanitized version of it. You’re staying in a real neighborhood where locals grab their morning coffee and kids walk to school, which is refreshing after seeing so many cookie-cutter hotels in the city center. The building itself has that solid, no-nonsense Central European vibe – thick walls that keep things surprisingly quiet even though you’re just a quick tram ride from all the tourist madness. Speaking of which, the tram stop is literally right there, and honestly, I found myself preferring the 12-minute ride into Old Town over fighting through the crowds staying right in the thick of things. Plus, you’ll save a decent chunk of change compared to those overpriced places near the castle.

What really won me over was how the staff seemed to actually care about getting things right. Check-in was smooth (they speak solid English, thank god), and when I mentioned I was heading to a concert at Palac Akropolis, the front desk guy didn’t just nod politely – he pulled out a map and showed me the best walking route through Vinohrady. These are the kind of touches that make a 4-star rating feel genuine rather than just something they slapped on the building. The rooms are comfortable without trying too hard – clean lines, decent bathroom pressure, and windows that actually open, which is rarer than you’d think. I mean, it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury, but everything works the way it should, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want after a long day of walking on cobblestones. The neighborhood gets pretty quiet after 9 PM, so if you’re looking to party until dawn, you might feel a bit isolated, but for me, being able to sleep without earplugs was worth its weight in Czech beer. And speaking of beer – there’s this little pub called U Fleku about ten minutes away that serves some of the best dark lager I’ve ever had, and I’m pretty sure no guidebook mentions it.
