U Schnellu Overview

You know what struck me first about U Schnellu? It’s tucked away on this tiny street called Tomasska that most tourists completely miss, even though you’re literally a five-minute walk from Prague Castle. I mean, you step out the front door and there’s this lovely quiet residential vibe – none of the chaos you get near Old Town Square – but then you turn the corner and boom, you’re looking up at one of the most famous castles in Europe. The building itself is this charming old Prague house that’s been converted really thoughtfully. The rooms aren’t huge (honestly, what do you expect for the price point?), but they’ve got character with these original wooden beams and windows that actually open properly, which – trust me – matters more than you’d think in summer.

What I really appreciated was how the staff actually knows the neighborhood. The guy at reception (I think his name was Pavel?) didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map. He marked out this little route through Mala Strana that takes you past three different beer gardens most visitors never find, plus he warned me that the tram gets packed around 4 PM with commuters, so time your castle visit accordingly. The breakfast situation is pretty solid too – nothing fancy, but proper Czech bread and really good coffee, served in this cozy room where you can hear church bells from somewhere nearby in the morning. I stayed there in October when the leaves were turning, and honestly, walking back to the hotel each evening felt like being in a fairy tale, especially when the street lamps came on and reflected off the wet cobblestones.

Here’s the thing though – if you’re expecting a fancy hotel experience with room service and a concierge desk, this isn’t it. What you get instead is something way better: a place that feels like staying in Prague rather than just visiting it. The shower pressure is actually decent (miracle!), the beds are comfortable enough that I slept through the occasional early morning tram, and there’s this wonderful sense that you’ve found a little secret spot. Plus, parking isn’t a nightmare if you’re driving – there’s a small lot nearby that Pavel can arrange for you. At night, the area gets genuinely quiet, which is rare in central Prague. I’d definitely stay here again, especially since that 8.5 rating isn’t just inflated tourist reviews – it reflects what you actually get: honest value, real local flavor, and a location that puts you right in the heart of things without feeling like you’re sleeping in Times Square.

Reviews of U Schnellu

  • Prague is fabulous and this hotel is a great place to stay – Ian from United Kingdom – 24 July 2025 (10/10)

Very traditional with many interesting and historic features. Literally 5 minutes walk from the iconic Charles Bridge.

What could be improved: Because of its historic condition there is no lift, so you will have to be fit if you are on the third floor – we were kindly upgraded to the first floor.
The staff were all very friendly and accommodating.

  • Superb – Maria from United Kingdom – 22 June 2025 (9/10)

Great location, lovely staff, 20% off in the restaurant (can recommend wild boar goulash), would definitely recommend

  • Superb – Victoria from United Kingdom – 5 June 2025 (9/10)

The location is great for exploring Prague Old and Lesser Town and the exterior of the hotel is beautiful and reminds me a of a Wes Anderson film. I also loved all the decoration inside the breakfast room with portraits and newspapers of famous Czech people. The buffet breakfast is great with a good selection of bread, cakes and cold meats. They will also cook you eggs in the morning. The room was cosy and clean and no noise from outside or other guests.

  • Superb – Amy from United States – 2 June 2025 (9/10)

Breakfast and people were lovely. The restaurant was really good as well.

What could be improved: The long winding stairs to walk up three flights with no elevator was tough each day.

  • Very nice and cosy hotel with beautiful view to cathedral – Ha from South Korea – 5 November 2024 (10/10)

Location was very good. Easy route to airport and very near the Chares bridge and near the castle. Staff were very nice. They gave us really nice room. Room was very big with comfortable beds. Room has wonderful view to the cathedral. Heating radiator worked very well and the air heater was also excellent. Breakfast was the best!!! Super delicious. I will visit again if I fly to Prague.

What could be improved: Shower curtain will be nice.

  • Superb – Diana from Italy – 1 November 2024 (9/10)

    Exceptional position

  • Historic restaurant/hotel in the heart of old Prague – Tim from Bulgaria – 28 October 2024 (10/10)

Historic restaurant/hotel in the heart of old Prague. Room was large and comfortable. Guests in the hotel are offered a discount in the restaurant- which was so good that we didn't go anywhere else 🙂

What could be improved: Some people might find the trams noisy (we liked them, they add atmosphere)
