U Medvidku-Brewery Hotel

Capital City of Prague, Czechia
Na Perstyne 5, Prague, 11000, Czech Republic

Overview

Honestly, U Medvidku caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best way possible. You walk into what looks like just another Prague hotel on Na Perstyne, but then you realize you’re actually staying above one of the city’s oldest functioning breweries. The smell hits you first (in a good way) – that rich, malty aroma that just sort of wraps around you when you step through the entrance. It’s not overwhelming, just… authentic, you know?

The rooms themselves are pretty solid for a 3-star place. Nothing fancy, but they’ve got character – exposed beams, thick walls that actually keep the sound down (which honestly surprised me, given that there’s a full brewery operation below). I stayed in one of the rooms facing the courtyard, and while it wasn’t huge, the windows were decent-sized and the bed was way more comfortable than I expected. The bathroom was small but functional – typical European hotel style, but clean and well-maintained. What I really appreciated was how quiet it got at night. You’d think being right in the center of things would mean constant noise, but once the brewery pub winds down around midnight, it’s actually pretty peaceful.

Here’s the thing that makes this place special though – you’re literally staying in a piece of Prague history. The brewery downstairs has been operating since 1466, and they’re still brewing their own beer on-site. You can smell it happening during the day, which might sound weird but it’s actually kind of cozy. The pub gets busy with locals (always a good sign), especially in the evenings, and the food is legitimately good Czech comfort food – not just tourist stuff. I had their goulash and honestly, it was better than places charging twice as much near the Old Town Square. The beer, well… you’re drinking it literally feet from where it was made, so it doesn’t get much fresher than that.

Location-wise, you’re about a five-minute walk from Wenceslas Square, but tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with the constant stream of tour groups. Charles Bridge is maybe ten minutes on foot, and you’re close enough to everything that matters without being right in the chaos. There’s a tram stop practically around the corner if you need to get somewhere quickly, and honestly, the staff actually knows the area – they gave me directions to a local market I never would have found otherwise.

The whole experience feels authentic in a way that’s getting harder to find in Prague. Sure, it’s not luxury – the elevator is tiny, the hallways are narrow, and don’t expect a fancy lobby. But there’s something genuinely cool about falling asleep to the faint sounds of a medieval brewery and waking up knowing you can get fresh bread and excellent coffee within a two-minute walk. For the price point and that 8.9 rating, it makes total sense. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re actually experiencing Prague, not just visiting it.

Exceptional

Everything about it! This was our fourth visit at U Medvikdu and each made us feel that this was our "home away from home".

What could be improved: There was nothing I did not like

The best accommodation in terms of price, quality, friendliness and location.

The hotel is located in Prague's Old Town, about 5-10 minutes from Wenceslas Square and the train station. It is the best option for tourists to stay in a central location at an affordable price. The hotel is beautiful, the staff is friendly and welcoming, which is true for the whole city. I had a great four days here, I will definitely come back and stay here again.

The location was great. I was able to walk to all the attractions. The room was spacious and bed was comfy

What could be improved: The elevator only goes to the 2nd floor. My room was on the 3rd floor. This wasn’t an issue for me, but other people may struggle walking up a flight of stairs with their luggage
