U Cervene zidle – Red Chair Hotel Overview

So I stumbled across U Cervene zidle – which translates to Red Chair Hotel, though honestly everyone just calls it by its Czech name – tucked away on Liliova Street, and it’s one of those places that gets everything right without trying too hard. You know how some hotels feel like they’re performing for you? This isn’t that. It’s more like staying at your well-traveled friend’s place, if your friend happened to have impeccable taste and lived in a 14th-century building steps from Prague Castle.

The location is actually ridiculous – I mean that in the best way. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Charles Bridge, but here’s the thing everyone misses: you’re on the quiet side of Old Town. While tourists are packed like sardines on Nerudova Street huffing up to the castle, you can slip out of the hotel and take Kampa Island route instead. Way more peaceful, and you get those killer views of the Vltava that nobody talks about. The hotel sits in this narrow medieval street that’s barely wide enough for a small car, which means it stays pretty quiet even during peak summer madness – though you’ll definitely hear the occasional group of late-night revelers stumbling back from the beer gardens around midnight.

What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to keep the old-world character without making you feel like you’re sleeping in a museum. The rooms aren’t huge (we’re talking European city center here, not suburban America), but they’re thoughtfully designed with these gorgeous exposed beams and modern bathrooms that actually work. The red chair theme isn’t overdone – just subtle nods here and there that make you smile rather than roll your eyes. I stayed here in both shoulder season and peak summer, and honestly, the staff remembers you, which is pretty rare for a 3-star property. Check-in is smooth, they’ll hold your bags if you arrive early, and they’ve got solid recommendations that go beyond the obvious tourist traps.

The 8.4 rating makes total sense when you factor in the price point and location. You’re paying significantly less than those boutique places closer to Wenceslas Square, but you’re getting a much more authentic Prague experience. Sure, there’s no fancy spa or rooftop bar, but there’s a genuine family-run wine bar literally next door that stays open late, and the hotel’s breakfast (simple but good quality) gets you fueled up for walking these cobblestone streets all day.

One heads up – if you’re driving, forget about parking right at the hotel. The nearest garage is about a five-minute walk, but honestly, you won’t need a car anyway. Everything worth seeing in Prague is either walkable from here or easily reachable by tram. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I was bringing friends who appreciate character over corporate polish.

The concierge service in Prague can arrange exclusive tours of Prague Castle, secure reservations at traditional beer halls, and organize personalized visits to Charles Bridge and the UNESCO World Heritage historic center.

Reviews of U Cervene zidle – Red Chair Hotel

  • The location was the best. It didn’t feel like a hotel but a residence. – Brooks from Germany – 25 July 2025 (8/10)

The location!!! Lovely bar with wonderful bartenders across the street. They have AC.

What could be improved: Did not offer breakfast.

  • Superb – Svitlana from Ukraine – 17 July 2025 (9/10)

Excellent location. Nice rooms, cosy. It's great to have a kettle and hairdryer in the room. It makes life easier for travellers.

What could be improved: A small waste bin in the bathroom was really needed.

  • Superb – Dorian from Austria – 6 July 2025 (9/10)

Air conditioner saved us in the summer heat. The facilities were nice and well equipped with everything we needed.

What could be improved: The fridge was very weak and didn't chill things well

  • Superb – Lawrence from United States – 16 June 2025 (9/10)

This hotel was centrally located in the old city. The room wasn't super big but functional, especially since I was alone. Still okay for 2. I got a good rate which made this place a very good deal.

What could be improved: There is no air-conditioning, which matters because the room faces the street. The street is fairly quiet, but there is a bar across the street, so keeping the windows open could be problematic.

  • Great stay – but noisy. – Katharine from New Zealand – 10 June 2025 (7/10)

Great location. Very easily accessible to all the tourist hotspots. Room is basic but had everything we needed for our short stay. Great rain shower!!

What could be improved: It’s SOOO noisy! Because of the location, the hotel is very close to night life and the windows are not double glazed. You will wake up multiple times in the night from very drunk tourists and the bar literally across the street. For the 3 nights we stayed, unfortunately we had very poor sleep.

  • Cosy apartments in the heart of Prague – Evelina from Lithuania – 9 May 2025 (9/10)

Very good location, safe entrances with many card-locked doors. Lovely wooden furniture in the room, comfy beds, a bath tub was perfect after we got cold during traveling. There was a kettle, cups and a small fridge in the room too. Personally I appreciated to have a single normal bed in our triple room, not some foldable sleeping sofa.
On the ground floor there is an amazing chocolate cafe offering a variety of hot chocolates and desserts, a must-visit one.
Overall we are glad to have booked exactly this apartment!

What could be improved: One (but understandable) bad thing was that the room windows were to the street, not to the inner yard – street is small but noisy, close to some bars, at night there were a lot of loudy drunk people passing right under the windows. We could hardly fall asleep, especially on weekend.
The mirror in the bathroom was quite complicated to use for make-up.

  • Very good – Angela from United Kingdom – 23 December 2024 (8/10)

    What could be improved: N.A.

  • Superb – Danilo from Albania – 18 December 2024 (9/10)

Everything was perfect, location , hygene , staff etc.

  • Superb – Lucie from United Kingdom – 20 October 2024 (9/10)

Excellent accommodation: value for money, perfect location, clean

What could be improved: Thin walls. Quite easy to hear noise from the other rooms

  • Great, comfortable, friendly host. – Jorge from Colombia – 7 October 2024 (9/10)

Location, cleanliness, host very nice and accommodating

What could be improved: No elevator
