The Gold Bank

Prague, Czech Republic
40 Opletalova, Prague, 110 00, Czech Republic

Overview

Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Prague, and The Gold Bank honestly surprised me in the best way. You know that stretch of Opletalova where it gets busy but not touristy-crazy? That’s exactly where this place sits, and I mean that as a compliment. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Wenceslas Square, but you don’t have the drunk stag parties stumbling past your window at 3 AM.

The building itself has this whole converted bank thing going on – hence the name – and they actually did something interesting with it instead of just slapping some generic hotel furniture around and calling it themed. The lobby still has these massive vault doors that you can peek into, which honestly made me feel like I was in some spy movie. My room was on the fourth floor (there’s a proper elevator, thank god), and here’s what I appreciated: the windows actually open. I know that sounds basic, but you’d be amazed how many places seal you in with recycled air. The bed was firm – maybe too firm if you’re used to sinking into mattresses, but I slept really well. The bathroom was compact but well thought out, with decent water pressure and this rainfall showerhead that actually worked.

What really sold me on this place was the breakfast situation. They set it up in what used to be the old banking hall, so you’re eating under these ornate ceilings while watching Prague wake up through these huge windows. The spread wasn’t trying to be everything to everyone – just really solid basics done right. Fresh bread from a local bakery, proper coffee, and they had this local honey that the staff actually knew the story behind. The front desk team spoke excellent English and seemed to genuinely enjoy helping with recommendations. When I asked about getting to Vinohrady for dinner, the evening manager drew me a little map showing which tram stops to use and mentioned this wine bar I never would have found otherwise. That kind of local insight is worth its weight in gold when you’re trying to see Prague like someone who actually lives there. The area gets pretty quiet after business hours, which I loved – close enough to everything but far enough from the tourist circus that you can actually think. If you’re the type who needs to be right in Old Town’s thick of things, this might feel a bit removed, but honestly? That’s exactly why I’d stay here again.

Visitors often choose Prague apartments over traditional hotels because they provide more space, kitchen facilities, and the opportunity to live like a local in this magnificent Bohemian capital.

What could be improved: Rooms seem a bit small

I have stayed at this hotel on my previous visit to Prague and knew it was reliable and an excellent location. It’s great that you can control the temperature of the room as I prefer a cooler bedroom at night so I slept perfectly. The hotel is spotlessly clean and the staff are friendly. I would definitely stay here again.

What could be improved: Possibly some more refreshments for the room. More tea/coffee but the reception staff very happily gave us extra so it wasn’t a big issue.
