Sophie’s Hostel Overview

Honestly, I walked past Sophie’s Hostel three times before I actually found it on Melounova Street – it’s tucked into this quiet residential block that feels worlds away from the tourist chaos around Old Town Square, even though you’re literally a 15-minute walk from everything that matters. The building itself is one of those gorgeous Prague gems with high ceilings and original moldings that somehow survived decades of, well, everything this city’s been through.

What really got me about this place is how Sophie (yeah, there’s actually a Sophie, and she knows everyone’s name by day two) has managed to create something that feels more like staying at your cool aunt’s apartment than a typical hostel experience. The common areas have this lived-in warmth – mismatched vintage furniture, bookshelves crammed with travel guides in twelve languages, and honestly the best coffee setup I’ve encountered outside of actual cafés. You know what I mean? That proper espresso machine situation, not some sad instant coffee corner. The kitchen’s big enough that you’re not fighting for counter space, which matters more than you’d think when half the room is trying to make breakfast before catching morning trains to Český Krumlov. I spent way too many evenings just hanging out in the main room, playing cards with people from everywhere and getting recommendations that actually turned out to be good – like that little wine bar on Kampa Island that locals go to, not the tourist traps on Wenceslas Square.

The rooms themselves are clean without being sterile, if that makes sense. Good firm mattresses (seriously, my back didn’t hate me for once), individual reading lights that actually work, and enough outlets for everyone’s devices – small details that show someone’s actually thought about what travelers need. Sure, the shower pressure could be better, and if you’re on the street side you’ll hear the occasional tram rumbling by in the early morning, but honestly? Prague’s pretty quiet compared to most European capitals. The neighborhood’s got this residential vibe where you’ll see actual Czech families walking their dogs and old guys playing chess in the little park around the corner. There’s a proper grocery store two blocks down – not some overpriced convenience shop – and the tram stop connects you to basically anywhere you want to go in the city. I mean, Prague’s public transport is ridiculously good anyway, but being on a line that runs directly to the castle district without transfers? That’s just smart planning. After staying in places where I felt like I was camping in the middle of a theme park, Sophie’s hit that sweet spot of being close enough to everything but far enough away that you can actually sleep.

  • Exceptional – Or from United States – 18 July 2025 (10/10)

The hostel has the most amazing staff! They helped me with every issue I had. I want to say the receptionists managers were awesome.
Also, the hostel had fun evening like games night every week, which was a nice way to meet new people.

What could be improved: The place could use more AC

  • Would totally stay here again! – Lauzon from Canada – 10 June 2025 (10/10)

I loved how the all woman dorm room was set up. To have the kitchen and bathroom separated from the beds (like an apartment) made it super convenient to avoid making noise while others were sleeping! It was so spacious too. Staff is so kind and helpful. The place overall, is very charming.

What could be improved: Everything was great. I don’t have complaints. My only suggestion would be to add a little carpet in front of the shower to avoid spreading too much water around the bathroom floor.
