Hotel Description

You know what’s funny about Prague? Everyone obsesses over the Old Town Square and Charles Bridge, but some of the best experiences happen when you venture into neighborhoods where actual Czechs live. That’s exactly what you get with Penzion Palouček – it’s tucked away in Smíchov, this residential area that feels refreshingly normal after dealing with tourist crowds all day.

I’ll be honest, when I first walked up to the place on Petra Rezka street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star pension. But honestly, this little spot punches way above its weight. The building has that solid, no-nonsense Czech architecture – not Instagram-pretty, but sturdy and well-maintained in a way that actually matters when you’re trying to sleep. Speaking of sleep, the rooms are surprisingly quiet considering you’re still in the city. I mean, you’ll hear the occasional tram rumbling by (there’s a stop just a few minutes’ walk away), but it’s more of a gentle urban lullaby than anything disruptive.

What really won me over was how genuinely helpful the staff were – not in that overly rehearsed hotel way, but like neighbors who actually want you to enjoy Prague. They pointed me toward this amazing traditional pub called U Fleku that I never would’ve found otherwise, and when I mentioned wanting to avoid the tourist traps, they sketched out a walking route through Petřin Park that connects back to the city center. The breakfast spread is nothing fancy, but it’s proper Czech fare – good bread, local cheeses, and coffee that doesn’t taste like it came from a machine. Plus, and this matters more than you’d think, the whole place just smells clean. Not like cleaning chemicals, just… fresh and well-cared-for.

The location thing is actually perfect if you think about it strategically. Sure, you’re not stumbling distance from Wenceslas Square, but you’re a quick tram ride away from everything major, and honestly? After spending days surrounded by tour groups and overpriced restaurants, coming back to this quiet street feels like a relief. There’s a small grocery store around the corner, a few local cafés where you can practice your broken Czech on patient locals, and the whole vibe is just more authentic. I stayed here during shoulder season in October, and while I can’t speak to summer crowds, the area felt lived-in and comfortable – like you’re getting a glimpse of what Prague is actually like when it’s not performing for visitors. For the price point and that 8.9 rating, it makes total sense. Sometimes the best travel experiences come from places that don’t try too hard to impress you but just quietly do everything right.

  • Very comfortable stay. – Rohan from United Kingdom – 18 June 2025 (9/10)

The location is such that it requires use of public transport to the old town centre (the distance isn't much though). However, it is walking distance from the Visehrad fort complex.

The room you get is great value for money and very clean.

What could be improved: This isn't really something I disliked but it's something to know: the reception is closed from 12 noon to 2 pm, so plan your travel accordingly.

  • Great home away from home. – Sidhartha from Hong Kong – 7 January 2025 (10/10)

great staff and the location is in a residential neighbourhood , a bit far from city centre but a great place to sit back and relax and also enjoy Prague from a local's perspective. There is a super market nearby and Tram 18 takes you to city centre in like 15 mins. So, you aren't missing much. Very safe place to be.

What could be improved: Not applicable.
