Hotel Description
You know what’s funny about Prague? Everyone stays in the touristy bits around Old Town Square, but honestly, some of the best finds are tucked away in the residential neighborhoods where actual Czechs live. Penzion Chaloupka is one of those places – it’s perched up in a quiet area near Nad Hradnim vodojemem, which sounds intimidating but just means “above the castle water tower.” I mean, you’re still technically in Prague 6, but it feels like you’ve discovered this little secret that the tour groups haven’t figured out yet.
The thing about this place is that it’s properly Czech – not trying to be some international hotel chain, but actually embracing what a penzion should be. It’s family-run (you can tell because the check-in process involves actual conversation rather than corporate scripts), and the building has that solid, unpretentious feel that you get in this part of the city. The rooms are clean and comfortable without being fancy – think quality linens and decent water pressure rather than marble bathrooms and champagne on arrival. What really sold me was how quiet it gets at night. Prague can be surprisingly noisy, especially anywhere near the center, but up here you’ll actually sleep properly. The area has that residential hum during the day – kids playing, neighbors chatting – but after about 9 PM it’s genuinely peaceful.
Getting around is easier than you’d think, actually. Sure, you’re not stumbling distance from Charles Bridge, but there’s a tram stop that’ll get you to the castle or down to the city center without the hassle of driving (and trust me, you don’t want to drive in Prague’s old streets anyway). Plus, there’s something nice about coming “home” to a neighborhood where there are proper Czech pubs and little shops, not just tourist traps selling overpriced beer to Americans. The morning walk to the nearest bakery – there’s this excellent one about three blocks down – feels like you’re living in Prague rather than just visiting it. I honestly think the 8.8 rating is spot on; it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but for what it is – a genuine, well-run local place with personality – it delivers exactly what you’d hope for.

The pension was next to Baterie tram stop. Trams 1 and 2 to Praha centre in 20 mins. The receptionist was helpful and friendly room was on 2nd floor. Clean and tidy room. There is a light in the room and couldn't find a switch then realised its on motion sensor. I would use again
