When I first heard the name Old Town Basement, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical — but honestly, this three-star gem completely changed my perspective on what a basement hotel could be. Located right on Haštalské náměstí in Prague, you’re literally stepping into one of the most coveted spots in the entire city. The moment you walk down those stairs, there’s something unexpectedly cozy and intimate about the whole setup that just works.

Location Magic

Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of Prague hotels, but this location is honestly ridiculous — in the best possible way. You’re smack in the middle of Old Town, which means Charles Bridge is basically a pleasant five-minute stroll, and you can stumble back from the best beer halls without needing to figure out trams or taxis. The couples rating of 9.9 for location makes total sense when you realize you can walk to Prague Castle, the Astronomical Clock, and about a dozen incredible restaurants without breaking a sweat. I mean, you’re paying for that prime real estate, but it’s worth every crown.

The Underground Experience

The room situation here is actually pretty clever — they’ve transformed what could have been a dungeon-like space into something that feels more like a cozy hideaway. The ceilings aren’t sky-high, obviously, but there’s enough headroom and the lighting is warm enough that you forget you’re below street level. What surprised me most was how quiet it gets at night, despite being in such a bustling area. The stone walls seem to block out most of the street noise, which is honestly a blessing when you’re trying to sleep off a day of sightseeing and Czech beer.

Practical Considerations

You know what I appreciated? The staff actually knows the neighborhood inside and out — they pointed me toward this tiny local restaurant that I never would have found on my own, tucked away in a courtyard just two blocks over. The check-in process is straightforward, and they’re pretty flexible about luggage storage if you arrive early or need to leave bags after checkout. Just keep in mind that this isn’t a place with a fancy lobby or concierge desk — it’s more about the essentials done well, which honestly fits the whole Old Town vibe perfectly.

Why Guests Love It

That 9.1 rating really tells the story here — people come for the location and leave genuinely impressed by the whole experience. It’s one of those places where the concept could have been gimmicky, but instead it feels authentic and thoughtful. You’re getting incredible access to Prague’s most historic quarter without the premium price tag of the big hotel chains, and there’s something satisfying about telling people you stayed in an actual basement in Old Town and loved every minute of it. For couples especially, there’s a romantic, almost secret quality to the whole thing that just clicks.

  The apartment was spacious. It was also very close to the sites we wanted to visit. There were grocery stores and restaurants nearby. I liked the espresso pot for making coffee.

  The location was perfect, so close to everything we wanted to see in the old town. The bedroom & living rooms were large & comfortable. The kitchen was very basic but ok & there were heaps of places to eat close by. It was very cold when we arrived in Prague but the apartment was warm. Being a basement apartment, I imagine it stays cool in the hot summers. Our host, Pavel was lovely and even took us to the train station on the morning we left. I would recommend this place unreservedly.
