Monastery Hotel Overview

You know what’s wild about the Monastery Hotel? It’s actually built into a real 12th-century monastery – like, you’re literally sleeping where monks used to pray and brew beer centuries ago. The moment you walk through those massive wooden doors on Strahovské nádvoří, you feel this incredible sense of stepping back in time, but without any of that stuffy museum vibe that some historic places have.

I mean, the location alone is pretty unbeatable. You’re right up on Petřín Hill with the monastery’s famous brewery (honestly, some of the best beer in Prague, and that’s saying something), and it’s just a quick walk down to Lesser Town – though I’ll warn you, it’s definitely uphill on the way back, especially after sampling that monastery beer. The thing is, most tourists never make it up here because they stick to the castle or Old Town, so you get this peaceful, almost secretive feeling while still being close to everything. The trams run regularly from the bottom of the hill, but I actually loved the 15-minute walk through the quiet residential streets.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep the monastic atmosphere without making it feel like you’re roughing it. The rooms have these beautiful vaulted ceilings and original stone walls, but they’ve added modern touches that actually work – heated bathroom floors (trust me, you’ll appreciate this in winter), really comfortable beds, and surprisingly good WiFi throughout. The breakfast happens in what used to be the monastery’s refectory, and sitting there with morning light streaming through those ancient windows while you’re planning your day… it’s sort of magical, honestly.

The staff seems to genuinely care about the place’s history – our front desk guy spent twenty minutes telling us about the secret tunnels under the monastery and which rooms supposedly have the best ghost stories. Check-in was smooth, and they’re pretty flexible about storing luggage if you arrive early. Parking can be tricky since you’re in a historic area, but they have a small lot, and street parking is usually available if you don’t mind a short walk.

Here’s the thing though – if you’re looking for a typical hotel with a gym and room service, this isn’t it. It’s more about the experience of staying somewhere with genuine character and soul. The monastery library next door (Strahov Library) is absolutely worth seeing, and having it right there feels like having a private wonder of the world in your backyard. Plus, the views from some rooms across Prague’s red rooftops are the kind that make you understand why people fall in love with this city.

I’d definitely go back – actually, I’m already planning to. It’s one of those places that feels like a discovery, even though it’s been here for almost a thousand years.

Reviews of Monastery Hotel

  • Bernadette from Australia – 19 December 2022 (9/10)

We loved the location. Up on top of the hills overlooking the old town meant we were part of beautiful historic buildings but we also crossed the Charles Bridge as a daily ritual. Staff were helpful, breakfast lovely, rooms cosy and historic.

What could be improved: Can't really think of anything.

  • Joseph from United Kingdom – 22 February 2025 (9/10)

Hotel is in the most beautiful grounds, surrounded in history. Hotel rooms are clean, spacious, and have everything you need. Beds are comfy, Breakfast was great, lots to chose from. Staff are very helpful and polite. The hotel is at the top of a steep hill, we enjoyed the walk each day into the centre of Prague, which was beautiful. We thought the hotel was situated perfectly, with lots of bars and restaurants within walking distance.

What could be improved: We loved everything about the hotel. Personally for me, the room was way too hot during the night and woke me up. My husband thought it was a very comfortable heat and did not wake him.

  • Martin from United Kingdom – 17 January 2025 (9/10)

reception staff very polite, friendly and helpful. Room had beautiful views of the city and the monastery. The lady in the restaurant was lovely, and also so helpful. No complaints at all. Fantastic break away.

What could be improved: going home 🙁

  • Samantha from United Kingdom – 13 January 2025 (9/10)

This is a lovely hotel. We stayed here very last minute as our flight home had been cancelled and the next available flight was 3 days later! The room was very comfortable and spacious. The breakfast was very nice and plentiful. The location is perfect for the monastery area, the castle and the Petrin Tower. It's a downhill walk to Charles Bridge and the other side of the river and then up hill all the way back but you can either get your steps in or pay a small amount to get a tram back!

    What could be improved: Nothing.

  • Chihshuen from Taiwan – 23 December 2024 (9/10)

In monastery, 50m to the most beautiful library and nice beer house, can hear church bells all day, Clean, attic very warm (in Nov), affordable price w/breakfast

What could be improved: Walk up stairs, staff is not 24H

  • Boris from Israel – 13 December 2024 (9/10)

Perfect place in an ancient monastery. Outstanding feeling. The room was big and comfortable with free tea and coffee. The staff is the best I encountered. Very nice and helpful. There was also a minibar (that we didn’t use). It might come handy if you have a crave for something. There are restaurants a few steps from the hotel front entrance. There is also a brewery next to the hotel.

The breakfast provides everything you need. All the ingredients are fresh and not reused! We enjoyed it very much!!!

If we come to Prague again we will absolutely come to this hotel.

What could be improved: Nothing !

  • White from United Kingdom – 3 December 2024 (9/10)

Lovely quiet property off the beaten track but still within easy walking distance of The Old Town (if you don’t know the hill). Superb breakfast included. If busy night life isn’t your scene but you still want to enjoy a good beer and a natter, there is a super brewery on site

What could be improved: Walking up the hill after a long day site seeing. Be careful about using cabs. The prices between different drivers can vary enormously.

  • Ikenna from Austria – 9 November 2024 (9/10)

Location is excellent for seeing the sights of the old city. Parking was also a big plus

  • Davit from Georgia – 8 November 2024 (9/10)

What could be improved: all was good 👍
