Hotel Description

Honestly, when I first walked into Mama Shelter Prague, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect – the name sounds like a hostel, but this place is anything but. It’s tucked away on Veletržní in Holešovice, which I know sounds far from Old Town, but hear me out. This neighborhood is actually where locals hang out, and you’re literally a five-minute walk from Výstaviště (the exhibition grounds) where they host everything from food festivals to concerts. Plus, the tram connections are fantastic – you can be in Wenceslas Square in about fifteen minutes, and honestly, it’s nice to escape the tourist crowds at the end of the day.

The hotel itself is this cool mix of boutique design and actually functional space. You know what I love? The lobby doesn’t try too hard to be Instagram-perfect, but somehow it just works – there’s this relaxed energy where you’ll see business travelers mixing with couples on weekend getaways, and nobody feels out of place. The rooms are what really sold me though. They’re not huge (this is Europe, after all), but everything is thoughtfully designed. The beds are seriously comfortable – I’m talking sleep-until-noon comfortable – and the bathrooms have this industrial-chic thing going on that could’ve been terrible but actually feels pretty luxurious. The soundproofing is solid too, which matters because Holešovice can get lively, especially when there’s an event at the nearby venues.

What really sets this place apart is the vibe – it feels authentically Prague without being kitschy about it. The staff actually knows the city (not just the obvious tourist spots), and they’ll point you toward that little wine bar around the corner or tell you which tram to take to avoid the crowds at Prague Castle. The restaurant downstairs serves decent food that doesn’t feel like hotel food, if you know what I mean, and their breakfast is way better than the usual Continental spread. I mean, they have proper coffee, which shouldn’t be remarkable but somehow often is in hotels. The 8.9 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Prague, but it nails what most travelers actually want: a comfortable base that feels connected to the real city, not just the postcard version of it.

Reviews

  • Ömer from Austria – 2 January 2023 (9/10)

The hotel is located in a quiet district, also very close to the old town. Tram stop is just in front of the building. In a few stops, you will be at the heart of the city. A 20-25 min pleasant walk is also an option but you may prefer tram on the way back to the hotel because of the hill. Rooms were spotlessly clean, simple but nicely decorated. The view was great on the upper floor. The young and middle age group was aimed for the general design of the hotel, and you may feel this atmosphere by details such as video games, some design items and the fancy bar. The staff was helpful, trying to accomplish all our requests. Although it may be a bit crowded in the breakfast hall, the choices were quite rich. Great stay overall.

  • Lay from United Kingdom – 28 March 2025 (8/10)

There where so many interesting things, retro game machines, pinball, Pac-Man as well as pool tables etc. all free to play conveniently near the bar area.

  • Hanita from Israel – 23 March 2025 (9/10)

The atmosphere of the hotel was nothing short of amazing. The lobby was bustling with excitement as guests gathered to play games and socialize. The bar was a popular spot for people to unwind and enjoy some delicious drinks. There were also various activities offered, such as live music performances, which added to the overall wonderful and refreshing vibe of the hotel. It was the perfect place to relax and have a good time.

What could be improved: No notes-OVERALL A GOOD EXPERIENCE

  • Diego from Czech Republic – 10 February 2025 (9/10)

The breakfast was very good. Room was spacious and almost perfect. Everything very clean, and the amenities are great. Love the video game machines and activities in the lobby.

What could be improved: I would prefer no carpet in the room, due to dust allergy, as makes it more difficult to breath well overnight.

  • Michal from Poland – 9 February 2025 (9/10)

Great and friendly stuff, clean rooms, great location (close to the Old Town)

What could be improved: Not a lot of variety when it comes to breakfast.

  • Ewicia from Slovakia – 3 February 2025 (9/10)

Great location, comfortable bed, superb DJ playing in the bar during the evening, kind staff and nice environment.

What could be improved: We were only missing the kettle or coffee machine in the room.
