Hotel Waldstein

Valdstejnske nam. 6, Prague, 11000, Czech Republic

Overview

So I stumbled onto Hotel Waldstein almost by accident – well, not really by accident since I’d booked it, but you know what I mean. Walking through Valdštejnské náměstí (yeah, try saying that three times fast), you honestly might miss it at first because it’s tucked into this gorgeous baroque square that feels like a movie set. The whole area sits in Lesser Town, which locals call Malá Strana, and it’s basically where all the old aristocrats used to hang out before tourism took over.

The thing about this place is that it actually feels like staying in someone’s really well-appointed townhouse rather than a typical hotel. I mean, the building dates back centuries – you can tell from the thick walls and those satisfying heavy doors that close with a proper thunk. The rooms have this lived-in elegance that’s hard to fake, with period furniture that looks authentic because, well, it probably is. My room overlooked the square, and honestly, waking up to those pastel-colored baroque facades never got old. The beds are proper comfortable too, which matters more than people admit when you’re doing the whole tourist thing and walking everywhere.

What really sold me on the place was how the staff seemed to actually know Prague, not just the touristy bits. The guy at reception (I think his name was Pavel?) gave me directions to this tiny wine bar near Kampa Island that I never would’ve found otherwise. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Charles Bridge, but here’s the thing – you avoid all the crowds because you approach it from the castle side rather than fighting through the Old Town masses. The location is sort of perfect for exploring both the castle complex and the main city center without feeling like you’re camping out in tourist central.

Parking’s a bit of a nightmare, but that’s Prague for you – I ended up using a garage about ten minutes away, which the hotel helped arrange. The whole Lesser Town area gets pretty quiet after dark, so if you’re worried about noise, don’t be. Actually, the only sounds you’ll hear are probably church bells and the occasional late-night reveler stumbling home from one of the wine cellars nearby. Oh, and there’s this excellent traditional Czech restaurant literally around the corner – U Malířů – where locals actually eat, not just tourists taking Instagram photos of goulash.

The hotel manages to hit that sweet spot where it feels authentically Prague without being stuffy or museum-like. Breakfast was solid (nothing fancy, but proper coffee and fresh pastries), and they’ve got this small courtyard where you can sit with a drink if the weather cooperates. I stayed during shoulder season in October, which was perfect – fewer crowds, crisp autumn air, and you could actually appreciate the architecture without dodging selfie sticks every five seconds. For a four-star place, it punches above its weight, probably because it feels more like a well-kept secret than a typical hotel chain operation.

When we arrived, we were told that due to technical difficulties there was no room for us to stay in. So, we were placed in one of their sister hotels, Bishops House, and after the initial frustration this turned out to be a really great stay at Bishops House hotel.

What could be improved: Technical difficulties

Location, Breakfast and room were great.

What could be improved: Hot Water pressure was weak. I'm guessing it was a temporary thing.
