You know what hit me first about Hotel Hoffmeister? The lobby actually smells like old books and good coffee, not that generic hotel air freshener scent. It’s tucked away on Pod Bruskou, which honestly most tourists walk right past on their way to the castle – and that’s exactly why I loved it. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Lesser Town Square, but somehow you’ve escaped all the tour groups clustered around those bigger hotels on Nerudova Street.

The whole place feels like someone’s very wealthy, very cultured uncle decided to open a hotel. I mean, there’s original art everywhere (and I’m talking actual paintings, not those mass-produced prints), plus the owner apparently collects vintage cars, so don’t be surprised if you spot a classic Jaguar parked outside. My room had these impossibly high ceilings and windows that opened – actually opened! – onto a quiet courtyard where you could hear church bells instead of tram noise. The bathroom was one of those marble affairs that makes you feel slightly guilty about your normal shower routine back home. Though I’ll be honest, the WiFi was a bit spotty on the third floor, which might matter if you’re trying to work.

What really sold me was the restaurant downstairs. The chef does this thing with duck that I’m still thinking about months later, and the sommelier – well, he actually knows Czech wines beyond just the tourist stuff they serve everywhere else. Plus the staff genuinely seems to remember guests’ names, which sounds small but feels huge when you’re jet-lagged and trying to figure out how Prague’s public transport works. Fair warning though: this isn’t the kind of place where you’ll bump into backpackers in the breakfast room. It definitely skews toward the “celebrating our anniversary” crowd rather than the “gap year adventure” scene. But if you want to feel like you’ve discovered something special in Prague without dealing with the chaos of Old Town, this spot nails it perfectly.
