You know what struck me first about Hillside Studios? The name actually makes sense – it’s literally tucked into this quiet residential slope in Prague’s Smíchov district, and honestly, that’s half the charm right there. When I walked up Cetyňská street (which, fair warning, is a bit of an uphill trek with luggage), I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place, but sometimes those expectations work in your favor.

The studios themselves are exactly what you’d want if you’re the type who gets claustrophobic in typical hotel boxes. I mean, you’ve got actual space to spread out, a little kitchenette that’s more functional than you’d think, and windows that open to let in real air – none of that sealed-building stuffiness. The whole setup feels more like borrowing a friend’s apartment than staying in tourist accommodation. What really impressed me was how quiet it gets at night, despite being reasonably close to the action. You’re maybe a 15-minute tram ride from Old Town, but far enough up the hill that you escape most of the street noise and drunk tourists stumbling around at 2 AM. The tram stop is practically around the corner, which saves you from those brutal Prague cobblestone walks when you’re tired.

Here’s the thing about this area that most visitors don’t realize – you’re actually in one of the neighborhoods where real Praguers live and work. There’s this excellent little grocery store about two blocks down where the cashier started recognizing me after three days, and a pub (well, several pubs, this is Prague) where locals hang out and won’t immediately switch to tourist-English when you walk in. The staff at Hillside Studios gets this too – they’re not overly chatty in that forced hospitality way, but they know their neighborhood and will point you toward the good bakery instead of the touristy one. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, no upselling or lengthy explanations of amenities you didn’t ask about. That 9.1 rating starts making sense when you realize it’s the little things done right – decent water pressure, reliable wifi, and housekeeping that doesn’t rearrange all your stuff. Is it fancy? Not particularly. Will you have Instagram-worthy marble bathrooms? Definitely not. But if you want a genuine base for exploring Prague without feeling like you’re staying in a tourist bubble, this is exactly the kind of place that delivers on what it promises without any pretense about being something it’s not.
