Grand Hotel Praha Overview

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked into the Grand Hotel Praha, I wasn’t expecting much from another “grand” hotel in Prague’s tourist center. But this place actually surprised me, and that doesn’t happen often anymore. You’re literally on Old Town Square (locals call it Staroměstské náměsti), which means you’re about thirty seconds from the Astronomical Clock and all that medieval magic, but here’s the thing – the hotel somehow manages to feel like a proper retreat from all the selfie sticks and tour groups milling around outside.

The building itself has this wonderfully worn elegance that feels authentic rather than trying too hard. I mean, you can tell it’s been hosting travelers for decades, and honestly, that shows in the best way possible. The rooms aren’t huge – this is Prague’s historic center, after all, space is at a premium – but they’re thoughtfully laid out with those high ceilings that make everything feel more spacious than it actually is. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays, even though you’re in the heart of everything. The windows are proper thick glass, so even during summer when the square gets pretty rowdy with late-night revelers, you can actually sleep. Pro tip: if you’re a light sleeper, maybe pack earplugs anyway during peak season (June through August gets intense), but most nights you’ll be fine.

The staff genuinely knows their stuff about Prague – not just the obvious tourist spots, but they’ll point you toward that little wine bar on Nerudova Street or tell you which tram to take to avoid the crowds heading up to the castle. I actually ended up having a twenty-minute conversation with the concierge about the best bakeries in Vinohrady, which led to some of the best koláče I’ve ever had. The breakfast spread is solid too, though nothing revolutionary – good local breads, decent coffee (finally, a hotel in Central Europe that doesn’t serve dishwater), and they usually have some Czech specialties mixed in with the international stuff. Check-in was smooth, none of that “your room isn’t ready until 4 PM” nonsense, and they stored my luggage without any fuss when I arrived early.

What really sells this place for me is the location without the chaos. You step outside and you’re immediately in one of Europe’s most beautiful squares, but step back inside and you remember why you chose a proper hotel over some cramped Airbnb. The 8.1 rating feels about right – it’s not perfect, the elevator’s a bit temperamental and some of the bathrooms could use updating, but it delivers exactly what you want from a four-star stay in Prague. If you’re the type who wants to be in the thick of things but still have a comfortable base to return to, this works really well.

Reviews of Grand Hotel Praha

  • Gary from United Kingdom – 6 December 2024 (9/10)

    Prime location, friendly staff

What could be improved: Old fashioned showering facilities

  • Sam from United Kingdom – 30 March 2025 (8/10)

Fantastic location during the day but noisy at night. Amazing staff. Comfortable bed. Good breakfast.

  • Revital from Israel – 17 March 2025 (9/10)

The staff was very friendly. The location is at the most central spot of the old city, which is where most tourists want to explore. The room was very spacious, with a wide hallway, 2 bathrooms, and a view to the Astronomical Clock. There was no noise from the street when the windows were closed. The breakfast was good.

  • Carole from United Kingdom – 3 March 2025 (7/10)

Its proximity to everything and friendly staff

What could be improved: The hotel was so hot. We asked to have our heating in our room turned down/off but none did it which spoilt it somewhat. Even with aircon on it was very hot to sleep in

  • James from United Kingdom – 22 February 2025 (9/10)

This is an old school Czech hotel, in a perfect location. It has echoes of the Soviet era but with modern comfort. I could not speak highly enough of the staff. The gentleman at the front desk helped me arrange a ticket to the Sparta Prague football match, which was great. Overall a very good experience.

What could be improved: No issues, but a kettle would be nice.

  • John from United Kingdom – 22 February 2025 (8/10)

Lovely large bedroom and bathroom in characterful building in the main square.

What could be improved: No coffee machine

  • Jennifer from Australia – 11 February 2025 (7/10)

    Location is perfect

What could be improved: Upon check in they couldn’t find our confirmed reservation. Then once shown the booking.com reservation on my phone they ‘found’ our booking. Only to then put us in a room with a brick wall view instead of the astronomical clock view we had paid for. Then upon questioning the room allocation we were told ‘sorry it is the way my boss works…I can move you’ and we were moved to the astronomical clock view room.

  • Colette from Ireland – 10 February 2025 (8/10)

The location was perfect with a beautiful view of the old town square and astronomical clock it was amazing
    The accommodation was very comfortable

What could be improved: We had a double room but there was 2 single duvets on the bed, the breakfast selection was a bit poor.

  • Louise from Australia – 3 February 2025 (9/10)

Loved the location, view over the square fom our window.
I loved the characterof the hotel.
    Great breakfast also

What could be improved: Not many smiles from staff or any interest in adding to our experience.

  • Nicky from United Kingdom – 29 January 2025 (8/10)

Great location right opposite the town hall. Large apartment/room with good facilities – very comfortable large double bed, modern TV, walk-in shower, separate WC and view of the astronomical clock

What could be improved: We were put in a top floor room (Room 302) in a separate building (2 buildings away from main hotel) – the building had no elevator (our booking confirmation specifically said upper floors were accessible via elevator) so we had to walk up several flights of stairs. Also, we had to walk round to the main hotel to have breakfast which wasn't ideal. It would have been nice to have tea/coffee making facilities in the room as it was a long trip down and out of the building just to get a coffee! Reception staff were helpful and polite.
